ITALIAN SHIP TO HAND OVER 2
SECURITY MEN TO INDIAN POLICE
The owners of the Italian oil tanker Enrica Lexie have
agreed to hand over two armed security men (Italian Marines) onboard the ship
who are alleged to have shot dead two Indian fishermen on February 15 off
Kollam coast India. Indian Coast Guard escorted the ship back to port
after it failed to report the incident which was left for the surviving
fisherman to do.
A case of murder was registered by Kollam police two
days ago and the Indian authorities gave the ship an ultimatum for the men to
surrender by 8
am Monday 20 February in
connection with the incident. The two will be questioned by police before any
further action is taken.
The late night announcement came shortly after India talked tough on the need for the Italian ship
authorities to cooperate with the probe into the killing of the fishermen.
Italian authorities in India first demonstrated reluctance for the two to be handed
over for even routine questioning until the Indians turned the heat on.
Indian Foreign Minister S M Krishna told his Italian
counterpart Giulio Terzi in a phone call that the captain of the Italian oil
tanker and the two men involved in the shooting must cooperate with Indian law
enforcers and to let the law take its course. Mr Krishna said the loss of lives
could have been avoided had the naval personnel on board the Enrica Lexie been
careful and exercised restraint. He told Mr. Terzi that all information clearly
indicated that the Indian fishermen were not carrying any arms or ammunition on
board their vessel. He said Indian fishing vessels do not carry these on board
but only fishing nets and the fish they catch. He told Mr Terzi of the strong
public opinion and agitation in Kerala at the loss of the innocent lives and
the need for an urgent resolution of this issue. The Chief Minister of Kerala described
the killing of the fishermen as cold-blooded murder and promised stringent
legal measurers against the people responsible for the shooting.
Indian Shipping Minister G K Vasan it was
internationally well-known that when there is a piracy attack, certain protocol
should be followed. "It was not followed here". He said there was a
suspicion as to why the Italian ship did not report the incident on
time.
