J. Boone Kauffman Biologist Oregon State University (conducts research in Indonesia) “If the seafood is produced on a typical Asian fish farm, a 100-gram (3.5 ounce) serving has an ecosystem carbon footprint of an astounding 198 kilograms (436 pounds) of CO2. A one-pound (454-gram) bag of frozen shrimp produces one ton of carbon dioxide. 50 to 60 percent of shrimp farms are located in tidal zones in Asian countries, mostly on cleared mangrove forests. The carbon footprint of the shrimp from this land use is about 10-fold greater than the land use carbon footprint of an equivalent amount of beef produced from a pasture formed from a tropical rainforest Emily Pidgeon Conservation International “Intact mangrove forests are of value in protecting the coastal ecosystems and communities against storms and tsunamis, such as the Indian Ocean tsunami in 2004 that killed some 230,000 people. The problem is the value of intact mangroves is hard to measure, and most of the shrimp farms are in impoverished areas that cannot easily afford conservation. It's difficult to find the financing to do it, or the political will. Kauffman's carbon measurements provide another argument in favour of protection.” Italian consumer protection group Codacons and the lawyers are demanding a repeat of the tests, claiming the samples from Capt. Francesco Schettino may have been contaminated or mislabelled. Under Italian law, those attaching civil suits to a criminal case must be informed of, and allowed to monitor, evidence and other developments in the probe. Indian Foreign Minister S M Krishna told his Italian counterpart Giulio Terzi in a phone call that the captain of the Italian oil tanker and the two men involved in the shooting must cooperate with Indian law enforcers and to let the law take its course. Mr Krishna said the loss of lives could have been avoided had the naval personnel on board the Enrica Lexie been careful and exercised restraint. He told Mr. Terzi that all information clearly indicated that the Indian fishermen were not carrying any arms or ammunition on board their vessel. He said Indian fishing vessels do not carry these on board but only fishing nets and the fish they catch. He told Mr Terzi of the strong public opinion and agitation in Kerala at the loss of the innocent lives and the need for an urgent resolution of this issue. The Chief Minister of Kerala described the killing of the fishermen as cold-blooded murder and promised stringent legal measurers against the people responsible for the shooting. Gregg Stemn Chairman Odyssey “I trust that the court of appeal will recognise the legal viciousness of the claim made by Spain.”
